Nanomechanik
Die Gruppe Nanomechanik untersucht die mechanischen Eigenschaften der Werkstoffe auf der Mikro- und Nanometerskala. Neben der Bestimmung der Festigkeit, liegt der Fokus auf Untersuchungen zu Bruchzähigkeit, Ermüdung und zeit-abhängiger Verformung.
Die umfangreiche maschinelle Ausstattung des Instituts ermöglicht es, die mechanischen Eigenschaften der Werkstoffe sowohl ex-situ als auch in-situ im Rasterelektronenmikroskop und Rasterkraftmikroskop zu charakterisieren. Dank der Möglichkeit der gezielten Probenherstellung mit dem Focused Ion Beam (FIB), hat sich der Anwendungsumfang der nanomechanischen Charakterisierungsmethoden in den vergangenen Jahren enorm vergrößert und reicht derzeit von konventioneller Nanoindentierung, über die Kompression von Mikrosäulen bis hin zu in-situ Mikrobiegeexperimenten. Des Weiteren bietet der Bulge-Test zusätzliche Möglichkeiten, um die Eigenschaften von Dünnschichten, die bis zu 50 nm dünn sein können, zu erforschen.
Benoit Merle leitet seit Mai 2022 den Lehrstuhl Mechanisches Verhalten von Werkstoffen am Institut für Werkstofftechnik der Universität Kassel.

Metallische Dünnschichten kommen bei einer Vielzahl von Anwendungen, z.B. in Sensoren und in mikroelektromechanischen Systemen (MEMS), zum Einsatz. Dort sind sie oft zyklischen Lasten ausgesetzt. Da ihre Dicke im Mikro- oder Nanometerbereich liegt, verfügen sie über andere Eigenschaften als Bulk-Material und in dessen Folge werden andere Schädigungsmechanismen bei der Ermüdung beobachtet. Eine dominierende Rolle bei der Art der Ermüdungsschädigung spielt auch das Substrat, auf dem die Dünnschicht aufgebracht ist. Die Art der Grenzfläche, die zwischen Substrat und Schicht vorliegt, kann als hart (Dünnschicht auf Metall- oder Keramiksubstrat), weich (Dünnschicht auf Polymer) oder freistehend (Dünnschicht ohne Substrat) klassifiziert werden.
